Se per alcuni è il simbolo della sporcizia, in molte culture
antiche il maiale rappresentava l'immagine stessa della fecondità e del
benessere. A Malta, in epoca neolitica, venne raffigurata una scrofa che
allattava tredici porcellini. Freyja, signora della guerra, dea germanica del desiderio e della magia, portava il soprannome di Sýr, scrofa.
If pigs and sows nowadays represent filth and dirt, in many ancient cultures they were the symbol itself or fecundity and wealth. In the Neolithic Age, in Malta, a sow breast-feeding thirteen suckling little pigs was depicted. The assigned name of Freyja, the War Mistress, Germanic Goddess of Desire and Magic, was Sýr, sow.
Presso i Celti c'era un'importante divinità suina, Ceridwen, detta anche "la vecchia bianca"; l'eroe Manannan, poi, aveva come attributo un maiale. Nei Misteri greci di Eleusi il maiale era l'offerta sacrificale in onore di Demetra, dea della fertilità e della vegetazione.
Nell'antico Egitto la scrofa che divora i suoi piccoli era un simbolo della dea del cielo Nut, i cui figli - le stelle - scompaiono al mattino per rinascere a sera; vi erano anche amuleti a forma di maiale, in seguito associato anche all'uccisore di Osiride, Seth.

Among the Celts there was an outstanding pork deity, Ceridwen, also known as " the Old White"; the hero, Manannan, had as attribute a sacred pig. In the Greek Eleusinian Mysteries the pig was the sacrificial offer tho the Fecundity and Vegetation Goddess Demetra.
In the Ancient Egypt the sow that eats up her children was the symbol of the Sky Goddess Nut, whose progeny - the stars - vanish at dawn and born again in the evening: there where also pig/sow shaped amulets, hereafter connected to Seth, Osiris' murderer.
In the Tibetan Buddhism the sow, Diamond, is the symbol of the Mother and the Queen of the Sky.
Lo psicologo junghiano Ernst Aeppli ha richiamato in più occasioni l'attenzione sull'anatomia del maiale, più simile a quella umana rispetto alla maggior parte dei mammiferi: sarebbe questo il motivo per il quale l'inconscio umano approva chiaramente il maiale. Sempre Aeppli tenta di spiegare le cause della grande considerazione goduta dal maiale, quale animale domestico, in epoca precristiana. Come simbolo onirico, il maiale viene ritenuto un segno di fortuna e imminente ricchezza: "Gettando uno sguardo in ogni porcile in cui ci siano dei piccoli, si può facilmente capire quanto la scrofa sia una felice e premurosa madre universale, pesante, avvolta dal fango, circondata da un autentico branco. [...] Un raggio della sua maternità quietamente risplende ancora oggi nei sogni in cui compare questo animale".

The Jungian psychologist Ernst Aeppli on a number of occasions called the attention to the pig's anatomy, the most similiar to the human's one than all other species. this is considered to be the reason why human subconscious frankly approves the PIG. Aeppli tries to explain the reason why the pig is highly regarded as a pet in the pre-Christian Era. In the dreamlike world the pig is considered as a symbol of good luck and immeasurable prosperity. "Glancing at every pigpen where little pigs live, everyone can easily understand how the sow is an happy and caring universal mother, warm, mud bathed, surrounded by an authentic herd. [ ...] Currently one of her maternity ray still sparkles in dreams where this sacred animal appears".
