Il proverbio del titolo fa riferimento alla fine della guerra del Peloponneso ( 431 a.C. - 404 a. C. ). Nella paremiologia questa frase si usa per indicare una vittoria ottenuta pagando un prezzo troppo alto.

Le due targhe sono un gioco di parole tra l'inglese blessed , benedetto, ed il francese blessé , ferito.

The saying in the title refers to the end of the Peloponnese war ( 431 B.C.- 404 B.C.). In paremiology this statement is meant to indicate a victory that has been reached by severe losses.

The two plates are a play on words between the English term blessed and the French term blessé, wounded.

Il regno dei morti greco , l'Ade, era, al contrario di quello ebraico e cristiano, un vero e proprio luogo fisico, al quale si poteva persino accedere in terra da alcuni luoghi impervi, difficilmente raggiungibili o comunque segreti e inaccessibili ai mortali.

Nell'Ade vi erano cinque fiumi: Stige ( odio) , Cocito  (lamento), Acheronte ( il fiume del dolore e della pena), Flegetonte ( fuoco) e Lete ( oblìo), l'acqua di quest'ultimo aveva la caratteristica di far perdere la memoria a chi la beveva. Narra Platone, nella "Repubblica", che le anime dei morti, ormai purificate dai peccati, vengono trasportate da vortici di fuoco e poggiate al suolo. Qui scelgono la loro prossima vita, e successivamente bevono l'acqua del fiume Lete.

Hades was the ancient Greek underworld but, unlike the Jewish and the Christian ones, it was actually a physical place: entrances to this realm were located in impracticable, wild, hardly reachable and secret sites.

The five rivers of the realm of Hades, and their symbolic meanings, are Acheron (the river of sorrow, or woe), Cocytus (lamentation), Phlegethon (fire), Lethe (oblivion ), and Styx (hate).

In "The Republic" by Plato we read that the deads' souls, already purified from sins, are carried away by whirlfires and then rest upon the ground. Here they are able to choose their next life, then they drink from Lethe river.
